WORK HISTORY
Chief Subeditor for the Daily Express and Sunday Express city desks, London
– July 2008 to January 2015.
My duties included liaising with multiple departments, including editors, advertising, the art desk, the picture desk, reporters and subeditors to ensure we got the highest results from the available resources.
I laid out the pages using InDesign and InCopy, and organised the pictures using PhotoStation.
I also wrote features and stories for the city and news desks when I had the opportunity.
Page editor for the Evening Star at Archant Suffolk, in Ipswich
– March 2007 to June 2008.
Designing, laying out and subediting news, sport and features pages.
In a frequently high-pressure environment, I created pages that grabbed and held the reader’s attention, using QuarkXpress.
This was achieved by writing headlines, subheadings and captions, as well as checking, cutting and amending copy. The role also involved selecting and manipulating images using PhotoShop if necessary.
I also scrutinised my colleagues’ work for errors or design weaknesses, making changes before sending the pages to the press
Page editor for the East Anglian Daily Times and its supplements.
October 2004 to March 2007.
My role was similar to that on the Evening Star except I designed more features pages and was frequently responsible for laying out and subbing the entire EA Magazine.
Reporter for the Evening Star, Ipswich
– January 2002 to September 2004
As well as covering general stories for the newsdesk, I was a patch reporter where I breathed life into a previously poor news area by working hard to make and sustain new contacts. Once it was successful, I was transferred to a new area to do similar there.
I also enjoyed writing features and was appointed the environmental reporter.
Graphic designer for the Editorial Support Unit at Archant Suffolk, Ipswich
– Spring 1999 to December 2002.
I helped to redesign and lay out editorial pages on the Suffolk Business Magazine, Essex Life and Hertfordshire Life magazines. I also compiled TV and other listings pages for the Evening
Star and the East Anglian Daily Times, and put together editorial pages for the Green ‘Un.
Graphic designer for the creative design department at Archant Suffolk Ipswich
September 1996 to Spring 1999.
Working on the night shift, I designed adverts for the various magazines and newspapers produced by the company.
VOLUNTARY WORK
In the summer of 1996, I worked for the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece in Crete.
This involved practical work on the beach, fundraising, public information and awareness. As part of this I gave slide shows about the project and turtle ecology to guests and staff at many hotels in the resort.
I have also designed and produced the newsletter for the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust on a voluntary basis.
EDUCATION
In April 2004, I completed a pre-entry journalism course at The Editorial Centre in Hastings.
